Happy New Years from Buenos Aires

Well, we rung in the new year with a bash. Buenos Aries diffinatly knows how to have a good time. We watched all of the random fireworks from our appartment then headed to a house party to celibrate. What a good time. It was also a great way to end our adventure. Tomorrow we head home. We are so glad we could our adventrue with everyone. Bien Ano!

Buenos Arises

Buenos Aires tiene mucho sabor! Lots of flavor. Beth and I took a tango leason at the most historic Milonga in the city. Giant plates of Carne and more Malbec than one can imagine. The Malbec here is much beter than the cheap Trader Joes or Rouses stuff we are used to in the states. We have tired several bottles of Finca La Linda, a top shelf (malbec)wine that cost $10 US dollars. Wine is the only thing that is cheap about Argentina. We are thinking about a side bussines that brings used Levi jeans to South America ($150 US dollars a pair!). And the Argentinians know how to cook a good steak. Our point and shoot camera has come back to life so we have a few photos to share. Like the photos of Torres del Paine, the photos of Buenos aires dont do the city justice. This city is rich in flavor. Most of our photos had to be shot with our 7 pound SLR Cannon and Nikon cameras, which we hope to produce beautiful prints for everyone when we return to the states. We are T-minus 2 hours to 2012 here and loving every minute of the end of this year. We are very excite about the year to come provided the Mayan proficy doesn’t involve Fire and Brimstone. Pinquinos!

After two stops during our flight from Santiago to Punta Arenas (include free wine and two meals) we grabbed our bags and a flyer for a tour of a pinguin colony. The Punta Areans airport has 3 gates, which is 2 more than one of the airports we stopped at on the way there. Neadless to say it was not hard to find a taxi when we landed. The taxi took us to our hostel and waited while we checked in, then brought us to the “tour” company. I use quotation marks because our tour consisted of a kid from Germany sitting shotgun and the two of us sitting in the back of a natural gas powered Nissan Sentra for a half hour ride to the pinguin colony. The pinguins are so funny and adoralbe, we wanted to adopt one, but they kind of frown on that. The German and us just laught the whole time. We spent an hour and half walking a loop trail through the colony and taking several photos. Those little guys are so entertaining and fun to watch walk around with their little feet. The inhabitants of this colony spend the warm months here and the cold months on an island off of Brazil, and return every year. We returned to Punta Arenas to enjoy a warm bowl of Caldillo (Chilean seafoud soup) and retire to the hostel to get our last night in a bed before 5 days of trecking in Torres del Paine. The morning light came about 4 hours after sunset.

Cajon de Maipo

The adventure has begun, seriously! On Friday we rent rented a 4 door 4×4 Nissan diesel pickup, so rad. I wish they sold these things en la Estados Unidos. The entrance to Canyon of Maipo is about a 30 kilometers from downtown Santiago, the road is paved up to 56 kilometers, the hotsprings are at the end of the road, 86 kilometers from town. Yep we drove 30 kilometers on a dirt road en Las Montañas de Andes. There are several pools to soak in, ranging from muy caliente (115ish degree Fahrenheit) to Luke warm. We soaked for an hour or so then made dinner before sunset and retired to our tent. The next morning we soaked again and packed up. I feel like we made our own Mastercard commercial, PRICELESS! The next day we headed back down the canyon, picked up a group of 5 Europeans hitchhikers and drove about half way out of the canyon with them in the back of the truck. At that point we located a place that offered horseback riding and went of a 2 hour tour on horse back (Andrew´s first time on a horse!). We climbed (Steeply!) up one side of the canyon to a level plateau that was still a couple thousand feet from the rim of the canyon. The tour was just us and Pablo, our guide. We had so much fun. After some cervesas y pastal de choclo we headed back up the canyon, passing up $48 a night campsite. We found free camping along the Yeso river. We pitched our tent and passed the evening with 3 Santiago locals mas cervesas and a bottle of Mezcal. To end the adventure we successfully navigated the truck into downtown Santiago, dropped our gear at the hostel, and returned the truck to the airport. We took the bus and metro back towards downtown. Back at the hostel now, all showered up, dirty clothes in the laundry, cooking some food, and relaxing. We fly to Punta Arenas Tuesday morning, and head for the park on Wednesday. We hope everyone is doing well. If we don´t get the chance before next Sunday we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! PS. The first night in town the Chilean futbol club won the South American championship. Es muy Loco in Fans in the Streets, beer bottles thrown at Federales in armored vehicles, and a little tear gas just for fun.

Santiago, Chile : We have arrived!

9 hours in the air, 1.5 hours in customs, 0.5 hours looking for our ride to the hostel, and WaLa! we´re here. We made a tour on foot to the Casa de Cambino (house of change) found dos cafes, then lunch con cervesas. The economic route landed us bunk beds in the hostel, pretty cool. We are stoked finally be here.

South America Triangle

Made a list, checked it twice, made another list, threw some things out, looks like every thing is going to fit. Our bags aren’t to heavy and there is plenty of room to for souvenirs. We are all checked for our flights, landing in Santiago wed. 12.14, ready as we’ll ever be for the this amazing adventure.

A week out before boarding a plane to Santiago, Chile. What a exciting feeling! Only months ago we were hanging in City Park at Voodoo Fest starting all the planning of this trip.

Now we are gearing up to take an adventure of a lifetime! We are making a triangle in South America. We first start at Santiago, Chile. Then to the end of the world: Patagonia! Back up north to Buenos Aires. Finally crossing over the Andes back to Santiago to connect the triangle.
